On May 24, 2023, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed SF 2995 into law, an omnibus bill with provisions that drastically change financial assistance/charity care screening requirements for hospitals throughout the state. The four major changes we will cover in this webinar are:

  • Requirements for screening uninsured patients for coverage and charity care eligibility.
  • Required updates to financial assistance/charity care policies, application forms, and documentation requirements.
  • Requirements for screening ALL PATIENTS for charity care eligibility before the hospital can pursue normal billing practices such as offering payment plans, accepting credit card payments, or sending accounts to collection agencies.
  • Limitation on charges for uninsured patients in households with income below $125,000 per year.

As a result, all Minnesota hospitals should:

  • Review their financial assistance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the new law.
  • Simplify and streamline their financial assistance/charity care application forms, documentation requirements, and application review procedures to avoid a significant increase in labor burden.
  • Develop a proactive communication strategy to ensure that all uninsured and insured patients are screened for financial assistance/charity care, so patients who do not qualify can continue to receive normal billing and payment collection attempts.

The new requirements go into effect on November 1, 2023, so time is of the essence. We look forward to helping you navigate these new hospital charity care screening requirements with confidence.

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through 2021! In January this year, we were still in the midst of the pandemic and counting down the days to spring. We have had great advancements, opportunities, and challenges that have presented themselves since January, and we are likely to continue to encounter these events throughout the remainder of the year. While summer is nearing its pinnacle point, I look back on all we’ve done this year. We’ve had some amazing webinars and are looking forward to the upcoming virtual Payer Panel this coming November.

With the ups, downs, and turn arounds we are proud to be able to serve you as MN AAHAM members. It is through you, your help, and your input, that we can continue to thrive and serve our members. As you read through this edition of the Gopher Tracks, I encourage you to consider possibly helping MN AAHAM in serving its members better. How do I do that, you ask? Please consider running for one of the upcoming board positions. Please consider volunteering your talents or insights with our upcoming Fall Conference. Please consider providing feedback in how we as an association can serve you better.

Without you, our members and vendors, we could not thrive nor succeed. I personally want to thank each and every one of you for your support and continued involvement in MN AAHAM during this very challenging and unpredictable time. I look forward to the days when we can meet in-person again, play heads and tails while meeting our valuable vendors, and collaborate with one another regarding the changes to this industry. Keep up the fantastic work everyone! We’ve got this!

Fellow AAHAM Members,

How are you? I realize that while I ask this question, I am staring at my laptop screen, not really expecting an answer from any of you.  How often during a day, week or year do we ask this question of others? Do we really listen to the answer or is it just an acceptable social gesture that we have come to expect of others and ourselves?

Listening is a skill that not everyone possesses.  We all know that one person who listens with the intent of responding rather than reflecting first.  So where am I going with this?  Our chapter strives to bring you meaningful education and information.  If you have any topic ideas for future meetings, please reach out to one of our board members.  This is helpful information when planning our future for the Minnesota Gopher Chapter, one that you can be part of.

I am becoming reflective as we get close to our November meeting, as this will be my last as your MN Gopher AAHAM President.  I have had the pleasure of serving two terms as your President and I am honored that you have had faith in me to lead this chapter.  As I reflect on the state of our chapter four years ago and where our chapter sits today, I am confident that the future leaders of our organization will continue to lead MN AAHAM with a strong and motivated passion.

I look forward to seeing each of you in St. Cloud for our November meeting.

Respectfully,

Marie Murphy
